SAN LEANDRO, Calif. & NEW ORLEANS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–FreeWire Technologies, a pioneer in flexible mobile power and EV charging technology, announced today that it will demonstrate its Mobi® Gen and Mobi® EV Charger units at DistribuTECH in partnership with Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), the nation’s sixth largest utility. SMUD is testing the units for deployment within Sacramento.
“These units allow us to expand our power service offerings,” said Lupe Jimenez, Manager of Energy Research and Development at SMUD. “SMUD chose FreeWire’s Mobi Gen and Mobi EV Charger units to engage Sacramento residents with a new offering aimed at improving air quality, driving EV adoption, and intelligently managing customer demand.”
Mobi Gen’s battery-backed power provides an alternative to diesel-burning generators for applications that require quiet, non-polluting power for facilities or remote sites, such as food trucks, music events, construction sites, emergency response, and backup power needs. Mobi EV Chargers are ideal for applications that require flexibility and when installing permanent infrastructure is not feasible; they deliver high-performance EV charging capabilities beyond the confines of fixed infrastructure.
“The flexibility of FreeWire’s technology helps us enable early market transformation while testing out different use cases,” said Jimenez. “Serving our community and increasing user engagement allows us to extend beyond the confines of the grid and reach more customers where and when they need power.”
This collaboration builds on SMUD’s major progress towards the clean energy transition, while identifying new ways to provide services that generate new revenue streams. The community-owned utility has drafted an Integrated Resource Plan, committing to achieving a 90% reduction in their electricity portfolio greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, relative to 1990 levels. The plan acknowledges that reducing GHG emissions in the Sacramento region will require transforming the local energy economy in ways that expand beyond current state policies and mandates. SMUD is poised to facilitate critical pieces of this transition. SMUD also expects to be a major partner with other local, regional, and state players in ensuring that Sacramento is on a path to achieving the state’s ambitious climate goals.
“We are thrilled to provide our infrastructure-light solutions to one of the most forward-thinking utilities in our home state,” said Arcady Sosinov, CEO of FreeWire Technologies. “We are dedicated to creating clean power options that scale to meet customer demand and expand accessibility at the grid edge. Utility innovation centered around the end-user will play a critical role in meeting California’s emissions goals and driving the future of electrification.”
FreeWire and SMUD will demonstrate the capabilities of the Mobi Gen at DistribuTECH in New Orleans from February 5th to 7th in booth #10748 by powering Petite Rouge Cafe Camionette’s coffee truck. Guests are invited to stop by and enjoy artisanal coffee and learn more about electrification beyond the grid. Additionally, James Frasher, Sr. Strategic Business Planner, Energy Storage and DER at SMUD, and Ethan Sprague, VP of Sales at FreeWire Technologies, will discuss “Enabling Infrastructure Transition: Challenges and Opportunities” at the Decarbonizing the Grid Knowledge Hub on Thursday, Feb 7th from 10:30-11:00 a.m. SMUD will present their holistic and integrated resource approach to decarbonization and how they’re evaluating the impact throughout the entire value chain from generation to consumption. This panel will also explore how innovative mobile power and EV charging technologies can help alleviate infrastructure constraints for both utilities and customers.
